Selling Your House and Need Packing Tips?
If you are selling your house but are moving out before the sale, the thought of packing and moving – on top of preparing the home for sale – might seem stressful. We’ve put together a list of 8 helpful packing tips that will keep you on track!
#1: De-clutter and purge
When you’ve lived in a place for some time, you most likely have accumulated “things” that have been pushed to the back of closets, bottom of bins, or the tops of shelves. Our advice to you is get rid of it. It may be hard at first to part with the winter hat you haven’t seen in years but trust us; if you didn’t even know it was there, you won’t miss it when it’s gone.
If you can, it’s a great idea to put these “things” in a donate pile or have a garage sale.
#2: You should always pack room by room
Packing room by room is helpful for many reasons. Among other benefits, It keeps the other rooms clean in the meantime and helps you focus and not get overwhelmed. Just make sure you start with the rooms you use the least.
Of course, there will be items you need to get to before you move out, so make sure you have a few open boxes of items that you will need to access.
#3: Use unwanted furniture to stage your home for sale
You may have some furniture pieces that you don’t want any more or were thinking of selling. Set them aside and ask your real estate agent whether it’s worth using to stage your home for sale. Some realtors include staging in their package, so it may not be necessary. Either way, it’s a good thing to bring up because it could save you money in the end.
Once the staging is over, you can choose to add it to the donate or sell list.
#4: Bubble Wrap and Newspaper are your friend
When you are on a tight timeline to get everything in your house packed, it can be tempting to take short cuts along the way – like not wrapping your dishes before putting them in boxes. Please don’t do this! You may think you are saving time, but fragile items will most likely break and you will have to spend money buying new dishes and time cleaning up the mess.
Buy some bubble wrap, have some old newspapers stacked up and create a wrapping station for all the fragile items in the room. The extra time spent will be well worth it!
#5: Set time aside each day to pack (yes even on weeknights)
If you can, stretch out the length of time to pack up your house. Trying to do it all in one day, or even two days, is a lot to take on.
A good schedule to start with is one hour every other weeknight and four hours over the weekend. You can add and subtract based on your needs and how much time you are able to dedicate each day. Having a schedule will help to keep you organized and from getting behind or overwhelmed.
#6: Label, Label, Label
Never underestimate the importance of labeling your boxes! Use a marker, pen, whatever you have – just make sure you label each box. Writing the words kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, is not enough. Be more specific. Add a small list below the name of the room with a few key categories in the box. It may seem tedious, but when you get into your new place and are looking for some toilet paper, you will be glad you did!
Another helpful labeling strategy is numbering each box. Documenting the box number, will ensure that you don’t miss any along the way, or if one goes missing, you will know which one it is based on the number.
#7: How to know whether to hire movers or do it yourself
This is a tricky one. It really depends on your specific needs and budget. If you have the budget to hire movers, it may be smart if you are short on time or don’t have friends or family who can help. The cost for movers can range from $800-$2,000 or more to move locally. It seems like a lot, but in the end, it may be worth it for you if budget isn’t an issue.
If you are concerned about the costs, there are two options. You can move everything on your own, or you can move the small stuff and save heavier items for the movers. This will save on labor costs because they will have fewer items to transport.
#8: Make it fun
The most important step to a stress-free move is to make it fun! Put on a packing playlist and jam out to your favorite songs. If you are packing with your significant other or kids, turn it into a competition or game to see who can pack the most boxes in an hour – rule suggestion: skipping the bubble wrap and newspaper should be considered cheating!
